Samuel ARBUCKLE & Mary MCMICHAEL

Samuel ARBUCKLE and Mary MCMICHAEL were born in Ireland in the early 1800s.  They had at least 8 children; the ship’s passenger list from 1847 on the JJ Cooke Shipping vessel Sesosthis sailing from Londonderry Ireland to Quebec lists a Samuel Arbuckle from Donaghadee (this is a county in Northern Ireland).   While the ages of the children is a bit different than in later information, the names are very similar and the birth order almost identical.

The family is listed in the census taken in 1852 located in Carleton county, Fitzroy township.  Fitzroy county was up the Ottawa River from the town of Ottawa.  It was an area that was being opened up for settlement in this time period.

Samuel is absent from the 1852 census; whether he died on the voyage to Canada or whether he died within the first 4 years that the family was in Fitzroy is unknown.  I have not found any mention of the gravestone anywhere in the area.

The 1852 census lists Mary (marked as a widow) and the surviving children;  all are listed as having been born in Tyrone, Ireland and as members of the Church of Scotland (this church would later become the Presbyterian church).

Mary ARBUCKLE (age 40), James (age 23), William (age 22), Anne (age 16), Samuel (age 15) John (age 12) Hamilton (age 11), Hanagh (age 9).  James and William are listed as labourers.
